Hatha yoga is the branch of yoga that typically comes to mind when you think of yoga in general terms. The Sanskrit word haha literally means “force” and thus alludes to a system of physical techniques. The practice involves using the body, mind and includes breathwork, yoga poses, and meditation and suitable for most levels including beginner. Yoga began in India around 2000 years ago as a series of spiritual breathing exercises. The term Hatha was first recorded in the 11th century, but it wasn't until the late 19th century that it came to America, gaining mainstream popularity in the 1960s.
