This often occurs in people who’ve had  surgery or infections during which their lymph nodes were damaged or removed. This type of lymphedema is called secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is lymphedema that happens on its own, not caused by another condition or injury. It can occur in children born with impaired or missing lymph nodes. There is no cure for lymphedema, but there are many ways it can be treated & managed, although surgery to remove tissue and excess fluid is among them, this is only considered an option in the most severe circumstances. There are several non-invasive procedures that can help with lymphedema – one of these is  - Manual Lymphatic Drainage. This is a targeted massage or manipulation of soft tissue, using specialist techniques (mostly very very light) which can aid in draining lymphatic fluid. Other techniques that can help are compression wraps a good skin care regime to keep skin supple & reduce infection, & exercises to promote & stimulate lymphatic drainage. Whilst the touch is light, manual lymphatic drainage is a very powerful treatment. It is also advisable to have a course of sessions to begin with, and a treatment plan can be discussed to help manage the condition, longterm. We recommend that you continue to attend & liaise with your surgeon or lymphadeama clinic. we are here to support these services and work alongside your Healthcare Team.  MLD Benefits Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) has a powerful cleansing, relaxing, pain releiving & immunological effects. in its manual form , it is a gentle, flowing, rhythmic massage and can be applied to a wide range of pathologies to great effect. MLD is used primarily to promote optimal functioning of the lymphatic vessels that lead to the circulatory system. the techniques facilitate the the removal of metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules & foreign substance from tissues.  When you have undergone surgery your lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed and therefore your immune system becomes compromised short term. Mld not only helps to reduce swelling and aid recovery but support your immune system and reduce infections. MLD relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain and enhances the activity of the immune system. it is effective in the wide variety of problems including - *Oedema/swelling *Skin Disorders  *Headaches *Skin Congestion *Sprains & Aches *Stress *Digestive Disorders *Pre & Post Surgery (to remove tissue congestion and reduce scar formation) It is particualarly useful as part of post mastectomy therapy - to reduce Odema & Fibrosis & relieve pain and tension.  * improve energy levels through water retention, toxin removal & aid in detoxification. *Build Immunity **There is no time limit to attend an MLD, we are clinically trained in Advanced post operative care in both Acute and long term care (fibrosis), however we will always respect each surgeons advice. we will not treat if you have an active infection or have been advised by surgeon against treatment.
