The method was developed by B.K.S Iyengar a direct student of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, of Mysore, India. It is a form of hatha yoga that develops strength, stamina, flexibility, and health in the body, attention, and awareness, in the mind. The emphasis is on learning through instruction, demonstration or adjustment, learning correct body alignment for physical stability and support in postures known as asana. Asana are sequenced in a particular order so that one can progress steadily in a safe and structured practice. The use of props help to support the body in learning. Postures for deep relaxation are introduced from the beginning. Gradually, sitting and reclining postures, forward bends, inversions, backbends, twists, arm balance, and flowing sequences are introduced. Music is not used to complement this class.
