Ashtanga Vinyasa- Introduction

CLOSED

About the Class

This beginner's Ashtanga Vinyasa class offers a structured and progressive introduction to this dynamic style of yoga. We'll break down the practice into manageable steps, building a solid foundation before flowing through the series. Our journey will begin with a detailed exploration of the fundamental poses. We'll take our time to learn the proper alignment, modifications, and benefits of each posture, ensuring a safe and effective practice. This initial phase will focus on understanding the mechanics of the poses and developing body awareness. Once we're comfortable with the individual poses, we'll introduce Ujjayi breathing, often called “victorious breath.” We'll practice this deep, controlled breathing technique while resting, learning to engage the diaphragm and create a gentle, oceanic sound. This breath is essential to Ashtanga Vinyasa, providing internal heat and focus. Next, we'll integrate the Ujjayi breath with the poses, connecting movement with breath in a seamless flow. This is where we begin to experience the vinyasa, the synchronization of breath and movement that characterizes Ashtanga. As we progress, we'll incorporate Sanskrit counting, the traditional way of numbering the poses in the sequence. This adds a rhythmic element to the practice and helps to deepen our connection to the lineage of Ashtanga. We'll also learn the drishti, or gaze point, for each pose, which enhances focus and concentration. Finally, we'll bring all these elements together: the poses, the Ujjayi breath, the Sanskrit counting, and the drishti, to create a flowing, integrated series. This will allow you to experience the full power and beauty of Ashtanga Vinyasa, building strength, flexibility, and mental clarity. This class provides a supportive environment for beginners to learn and grow in their Ashtanga practice.
