Lomi Lomi massage is also known as Hawaiian Temple Bodywork and as such has an essential spiritual component woven into it. Until the 1970’s it was only passed down within families from generation to generation as a form of traditional Hawaiian medicine. Some practitioners begin by reciting a prayer but styles vary from practitioner to practitioner as they would from family to family. Lomi Lomi embodies the Hawaiian concept of aloha. Aloha is an essence of being: love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness. Even in modern practice, Lomi Lomi therapists are taught to focus on the massage with love and intention. In the Hawaiian language, the word lomi means to knead, rub or soothe, to work in and out. The session is filled with beautiful, long, flowing strokes similar to a Hula dance; and often multiple parts of the body are massaged simultaneously with warm oils to promote harmony and balance within the entire body. The physical benefits of this style of massage are the same as other modalities in terms of relaxing tense muscles, enhancing the circulation and releasing stagnant energy. The difference lies in the Hawaiian traditions woven into the massage, including the belief that “loving hands” help you release not only physical tension but also mental, emotional and spiritual blockages.
