Wonderful friendly people, great space, fantastic instructors. This is a great place to learn Capoeira, and they have classes for all ages. Highly recommended.
Kasey Sanders (Baiano) has practiced martial arts since he was 7 years old from traditional styles like Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Wing Chun Kung Fu to eclectic arts such as Jun Fan JKD and Filipino Martial Arts. He discovered the art of Capoeira in 1998 and studied with Contramestre Didi, Joao Martins Leite (Centro Cultural Capoeira Sol Nascente, ) in 2001 who taught him the foundations and fundamentals of both learning and teaching Capoeira (Angola and Regional), and learned proficiency of playing instruments such as the Berimbau, Atabaque, and Pandeiro. Kasey also adapted to learning and speaking Brazilian Portuguese. In 2002, the first Capoeira group on the Jersey Shore previously named, Centro Cultural Sol Nascente USA and Kasey was nicknamed “Baiano” because of his appearance, adaptation to Brazilian culture and Capoeira. In 2004 he earned a green corda (old title of instructor formada in CCSN system) and was given permission to teach. He continued his training under the guidance of Contramestre Dede (Grupo de Capoeira Liberdade) who took over as Baiano’s liaison for the art. He continued to explore more about not only Capoeira but more fluency in language, history, music, dance, and a vested interest of Brazilian life in the US. Knowing he needed more, Baiano traveled to Brazil in 2008 to reconnect with the Associação Brasileira Capoeira Sol Nascente under Mestre Romeu, the founder of his orginal group. Unknown to him in Brazil he was being tested in a surprise Batizado in Uniao, Piaui Brazil. He was graduated as Professor after grueling sessions with many masters in his group. After returning to Brazil in October 2012, he was surprised once again by Mestre Romeu to now be called Sub Contramestre Baiano (1st level Contramestre). In June 2014, he is now graduated to Contramestre by his head instructor. To this day Baiano continues to promote Capoeira through presentations, cultural events and exploration of the martial art aspect of application as well as uniting with other Capoeirstas to increase popularity of this growing art form in New Jersey. Baiano offers his training at Pearl Street Gym in Long Branch, NJ.
