If you are over 50 years old and you want to start learning yoga, this course may work well for you. Learn the basic postures at a pace that is right for you, with people in your own age group.

We begin with a close examination of the feet and legs, then learn how to use the feet in basic standing postures. We also learn how to sit upright using the legs and activating the spine. From there other seated postures are introduced, and simple supine postures, all leading up to a shoulder stand or appropriate substitution. Props are provided for modification when needed.

This is a 12 week course. Students must be healthy, able go up and down stairs, and get up and down from the floor independently. If there is hearing impairment, please wear hearing aid.

Class meets Saturdays, 8:45 to 10:00 am.

Iyengar Ignite! 12-week series. This is a quick-paced beginner’s series for healthy people under the age of 50. Learn classical asanas (postures) in a clear step-by-step method. Recommended for those with no Iyengar Yoga experience. This is the foundation necessary before coming to Intermediate level classes. We start learning how to stand upright properly, and finish learning how to go upside down! Two modules over 12 weeks.

Module A--Stand Tall, Breathe Easy: In the first 6 weeks we focus on alignment in standing postures with stability. Gradually open the hips, hamstrings, and chest. Increase stamina while learning to align muscles, bones, and joints. Open groins and shoulder areas for better lymphatic flow and easier breathing.

Module B: Digest Better, Sleep Better, Chill Out: in the second 6 weeks, we keep up our stamina, chest opening, and hamstring work, and apply these capabilities to learn inversions. Shoulder Stand and Plow Posture improve digestion and hormonal balance, and de-stress the nervous system. Simple restorative postures introduced for quieting the mind.

Make up classes are allowed in the other Iyengar Ignite! Class. For example, if you registered for the Tuesday night series but will be gone for one or two classes, you can cancel one day in advance and reschedule a make-up in the Sunday class. Just let us know.

This is a series of 10 classes just for men. No experience necessary. Must be healthy and without injuries. Learn classic standing postures with special emphasis on lengthening tight hamstrings and shoulders.
