Drop In Dance Winnipeg: A Studio Built for Every Dancer
Last Updated on 20 July, 2026
How a Winnipeg founder who started by cleaning studios in exchange for space built one of the city’s most inclusive dance communities — and left Arcata for WellnessLiving to keep it running smoothly.
She Started By Cleaning Studios. Now She Runs One.
Maria founded Drop In Dance Winnipeg in the summer of 2017. The origin is specific: she was an adult who wanted to keep dancing, couldn’t find the right space, and decided to create one.
In the early days, she cleaned studios in exchange for studio time. Dance had become her anchor, especially after losing her father. What she wanted was simple — a place to move, to feel something, to be in a room with other people doing the same. Word spread. Others asked to join.
“Drop In Dance Winnipeg began in the summer of 2017, born from a love of dance and a desire to create more opportunities for movement in our city.”
The studio ran out of rented space until 2019, when it opened its own brick-and-mortar at 1379 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. With over 30 years of dance experience and 20 years of teaching, Maria built a studio that reflects exactly what she was looking for in 2017: welcoming, unpretentious, and built for dancers at every level.
A Studio That Means It When It Says “All Levels”
Drop In Dance Winnipeg runs two parallel models. The first is the drop-in: casual, flexible, pay-as-you-go classes for dancers who want to show up when they can. Drop-ins range from $10 to $22 per class, with 5-, 10-, and 20-class punch passes for regulars.
The second is the series model. Programs run in 8-, 12-, and 16-week sessions across four levels — Absolute Beginner, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each series builds toward a recital. That culminating performance is not optional pressure; it is the point.
Performance is where all the work comes together. Dancers who perform tend to feel more confident and connected. For adults who may have told themselves for years that dance wasn’t for them anymore, standing on a stage at the end of a 12-week series is the moment that changes that story.
Youth programming follows the same structure. Both age groups build toward a recital. Both share the same philosophy: you belong here, whatever your starting point.
The studio also rents space. Room availability is managed alongside the class calendar, with bookings handled as a separate service track so the schedule stays clean.
Why Maria Left Arcata for WellnessLiving
Maria had been in Arcata and had spent months evaluating alternatives before making the move. The decision was not gradual. It was the result of specific, recurring failures that had become impossible to absorb.
The billing problem was the most damaging. Intro passes she had configured not to renew were renewing anyway. Clients were being charged without expecting it. That meant refunds, lost processing fees, and trust conversations she should not have had to have.
“I’ll set an intro pass; I’ve set it not to renew, but it doesn’t renew… and then the customer’s charged when they’re not expecting to be charged.”
The staff access problem was just as persistent. Permissions that worked one week would break the next. “Every other week, there’s something at the front desk that they don’t have access to that they used to have access to.” A studio running drop-ins and series simultaneously cannot afford that kind of instability at the point of client contact.
What Maria wanted from a new platform was straightforward: set it, forget it. A system that does what it says, stays configured the way she configures it, and lets her team focus on the studio rather than troubleshooting software.
How WellnessLiving Fits the Drop In Dance Model
Three capabilities map directly to how the studio runs.
Series registration with split enrollment options. Maria needed clients to be able to register for a full session or, when needed, just the first half or second half of a program. WellnessLiving’s program structure supports that split without requiring staff to manually add clients to individual classes.
Space booking alongside the class calendar. The studio manages both class scheduling and room rentals from one back end. Assets in WellnessLiving allow rooms to be assigned to specific services and also booked separately when available. One system, two service tracks, no overlap.
A branded app for the client side. Maria added the white-label Achieve app so clients can handle registration, waivers, and purchases inside an experience that carries Drop In Dance Winnipeg’s identity. The client experience looks like the studio, not like a generic booking platform.
What Maria Is Building
Drop In Dance Winnipeg started with one person cleaning floors in exchange for studio time. It grew because it offered something Winnipeg’s dance scene was missing: a real home for adult dancers who just wanted to move.
The recital at the end of a 16-week series. The drop-in regular who shows up every Tuesday and doesn’t need a commitment to do it. The beginner who walks in having told herself for a decade that she wasn’t a dancer, and walks out three months later having proven herself wrong.
That is what Maria built. And it deserves software that runs as reliably as the community she has spent eight years creating.
