What Does a CrossFit Coach Do?
A CrossFit coach leads group workouts, teaches proper form, and motivates members to push their limits. They’re all about helping people get stronger, faster, and fitter while ensuring everyone stays safe.
A big part of the job is scaling workouts to suit different fitness levels, so everyone gets a challenge. They also contribute to building a strong sense of community and helping everyone feel welcome.
Requirements For Being a CrossFit Coach
To become a CrossFit coach, you must complete CrossFit’s Level 1 Course (CF-L1). This certification program includes lectures on foundational movements and the CrossFit methodology as well as small-group breakout sessions and workouts, where proper mechanics are demonstrated. The course can be completed online or in person at a few select locations in the US. The current price is $1,150 USD or $1,555 CAD.
This is the only credential required to become a CrossFit trainer in general, but certain affiliates may require employees to complete higher than Level 1. If you want to become the best of the best, you’re encouraged to go all the way to Level 4.
The Step-By-Step Guide to Becoming a CrossFit Coach
Ready to become a successful CrossFit coach? Follow these steps.
Step 1. Obtain your CF-L1 certificate
The first step is to obtain your CF-L1 certificate. Whether you’re attending an in-person or online course, you’ll be able to complete this certification in just two days. You will then need to pass a 50-question multiple-choice test to receive your certification.
The L1 program and test are offered in a variety of languages: German, English, Spanish, Latin, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese.
Step 2. Apply for online CrossFit jobs or start your own affiliate
One you’ve got your CF-L1, you’re eligible to become a CrossFit coach. Search for jobs online through Indeed, Monster, Craigslist, and other popular job sites in your area.
You also have the option to start your own CrossFit affiliate gym. The male-to-female ratio is an even split, making CrossFit gym ownership an awesome affiliate opportunity.
Because of the power of the CrossFit brand and startup resources, the failure rate for opening an affiliate is just 2%. That’s significantly lower than 20%, which is the average two-year failure rate for small businesses.

Step 3. Visit a variety of CrossFit gyms and introduce yourself
Often, the best way to break into a new industry is through personal connections. If you want to get more CrossFit coaching experience but don’t want to start your own affiliate, start visiting gyms in your area.
You can request to make an appointment to chat with the owner, or just pop in and join a trial workout.
Introduce yourself as a CrossFit coach, share your personal experience, and what you’re passionate about. Ask if the gym has any openings or if they need help adding a new weekly class.
Step 4. Complete additional CrossFit courses
Whether you’re running your own CrossFit affiliate or working as a coach, professional development will help you increase your income and seize new opportunities.
The learning doesn’t stop when you pass your CF-L1. There are also Levels 2 through 4, which take you on a guided journey towards becoming a world-class coach.
In Level 2, you’ll get a deeper understanding of the CrossFit methodology to help you with program design and lesson planning. This is essential if creating workouts of the day (WODs) is part of your coaching job. (Be sure to check out our WOD management software so you can easily create workout categories, exercises, and training circuits).
Levels 3 and 4 center more on the coach’s ability to train others in correct movements and to run a successful class.
Aside from the certification levels, there are a variety of CrossFit courses that can boost your coaching skills and income, including CrossFit Kids and Coaching the Aging Athlete. Both courses offer the opportunity to add new weekly classes at your gym.
Step 5. Revalidate your certification as needed
A CrossFit certification is good for three years. Before that point, you’ll need to revalidate your certification (this usually costs slightly less than the original price you paid to complete that level). Whatever level you completed is the level you’ll need to revalidate. For instance, if you completed Level 2, you would need to take the Level 2 Revalidation Course to keep your certification current.
